THE JOURNEY BEGINS
As you can probably tell by the flag, the family originated in Germany. I'm afraid we don't know where at this time, but that's the fun in researching, being the detective. Even detectives need help so if anyone reading this can give me some direction on how to go about finding out where, please, don't keep it to yourself! I welcome any and all help.
The German name for this family is Wahl, and was anglicized to "Wall" when they immigrated. We begin here with GENERATIONS 2 and 3. NOTE: Generation 1 is "UNKNOWN WAHL" father of the following generations. His name, tho we are not certain, could have also been HANS GEORGE. We think he came here in 1749 and went by the name John. But that is purely speculation as we have no proof of it.
The first of the Wall family to immigrate were brothers who are:
GENERATION 2
(1) CONRAD WALL.
He arrived in Pennsylvania, September 26, 1737 on the ship "ST. ANDREWS" from Cowes England, via Rotterdam Holland.
Ship master: John Stedman qualified him. On the passenger list however, his name was shown as "CONRATH WALD".
Conrad was born in Germany abt. 1721. Eventually he settled in what was then Augusta County, Virginia. He served in the French and Indian war and was given 50 acres of land for that service. He was married to CATEY (Could be Catherine Christina Herman) and had 5 children:
(1) JOHN. (2) CONRAD JR. (3) SARAH. (4) ADAM. (5) MARY MAGDELENA.
Conrad Wall (Sr..) died in Augusta County, Va. and his will probated, there, 1787.
The next to arrive was:
(2) ADAM WALL.
He arrived in Pennsylvania, September 5, 1738 on the ship "WINTER GALLEY" from Deals England, via Rotterdam Holland.
Ship master: Edward Paynter qualified him. Adam was born in Germany 1717/1718. Eventually he settled in what was then Augusta County, Virginia. He served in the French and Indian war and was given 50 acres of land for that service.
There appears to be no record of a marriage or children by Adam. He died, and his will probated, June 19, 1764 in Augusta County, Virginia.
He left his estate to his sister Apfel and his brother, (Johns') son John Jr.
The brothers appear to have had only one sister:
(3) APFEL/APPLE/APOL WALL.
Since she was a female there was no need to list her on the passenger list, nor was she mandated to take the oath, like the men over the age of 16 were.
No one is certain, but she may have arrived in Pennsylvania on the same ship that carried her brother, Adam.
Apfel was born in Germany, date unknown. Eventually she also settled in Augusta County and had land adjacent to Adam and Conrad.
She married JOHN HILL abt. 1765 after the death of her brother Adam. She died 1787 at which time she was known as Abigail Hill. Her will probated 5/17/1787 in Augusta County, Virginia.
She named no children of her own but did name the following:
Her brother CONRAD, Conrad's sons, JOHN, ADAM, CONRAD (JR.) and SALLY (Conrad's daughter, also known as Sarah)
She also mentions JAMES SALLES/SALLUST (who is mentioned later in the tree) Also she mentions, ADAM (son of Hans) who she stood godmother to. He was to receive all her land.
The next to arrive was:
(4) MARTIN WALL. He arrived in Pennsylvania, September 9, 1738 on the ship 'GLASCOW" and took his oath. Martin was born in Germany 1705/1706.
Eventually he settled in Augusta County and had land adjacent to Adam. Not much information on MARTIN is known at this time and it is not clear if he is related to our Wall line at this time.
The next to arrive was:
GENERATION 1.
(5) HANS (JOHN) GEORGE WALL.
He is my husband Jacks' 6th great grandfather.
He was born in Germany, date unknown He arrived in Pennsylvania, via Rotterdam Holland, on the ship "SPEEDWELL" September 25, 1749 and took his oath.
He eventually settled in Augusta County, Virginia on land adjacent to Adams' land and that of Michael Price, located on Stroubles Creek.
He was known there as John Wall, Sr. We know nothing of his wife, but do know he had at least one son named
JOHN WALL Jr. who had a wife named Margaret (?) .
Hans' estate was appraised in 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia which means he only lived about 12 years after his arrival.
JOHN WALL (Jr.) was Jack's 5th great grandfather.
He was born in Germany, date unknown. It is also not know for sure when he arrived but it can be assumed it was on the same ship with his father and must have been under the age of 16 since he was not listed on the passenger list and not required to take the oath of allegience.
Other Wall men, some with wives and children arrived in Pennsylvania thru the years from the same general area and nearly the same route.
Most likely they are related somehow but how, or if, is not known to me at this time.
I do feel it's important to mention their names, dates of arrival and ships here just in case others are tracing the Wall line and find these names in their search and can make a connection.
1749: Wendel Wall, the "Leslie"
1749: John Wall, and
Johannes Wahl/Wall , the "Fane"
(Johannes married in York in 1760 Anna Maria Kuntzer, daughter of Jacobe Kuntzer. - click on his name to read more about him.

1804: J.H. Wall, the "Brig Newton" from Hamburg.
also on this entry was listed a John Wall, age 11.
1808: Melchoir Wahl and wife, Anna Clara, the "Three Sisters"
With them a son Heinrich and daughter, Kunigunte.
Please note: I had many different sources for my research and have put them on a links page.
However I do wish to mention here a very good, must read, set of books for anyone researching early families from Montgomery or Botetourt County Virginia.

These were the first two generations of the "WALL" family who bravely left their homeland to embark on the journey of a "new and better life" and the start of their families.
Now continue on with us as we begin with the 3rd generation.
