Born in coastal Matthews County, in Virginia, Sally was destined for a life of philanthropy.
When the Civil War began she worked tirelessly on behalf of the South's wounded soldiers.
Because of this, she became the first and only woman to receive an officers commission in the Confederate Army.
Sally Louisa Thompkins never married.
